Concept images of Chris Evans as Captain America

AICN got their hands on some very official looking concept images showing what Chris Evans will look like in costume in The First Avenger: Captain America.

I think I miss the wings but overall, I think it looks pretty good. Quite modern, though. I'm confused about that.

ETA: There are IM2 spoilers in comments.

I'm thinking this has got to be for the Avengers or an early prototype.

It's very very modern and not 1940's at all. I'm not worried though, it shows ingenuity and thought, and you have a *lot* of these types of things before anything is finalized, so it looks to be me like they are working with elements and such to see what they can do.

Which is not that they aren't feeling totally enslaved to the comic look because we know from the 90's movie that doesn't quite work =P

I think I'd be perfectly happy if he had the headwings. He just looks so... bald without them.

That does look pretty damn modern! Maybe they will rough it up in some fashion to make it look more WWII era, or somthing.

[identity profile] ellyr-in-ink.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he just looks like they married the 616 Cap garb with the 1610 (Ultimates) Cap outfit.

I actually kind of like this look and wish they had put new "Top Cop" Steve in it instead of the black pajamas (still trying to say "Top Cop Steve Rogers" without the giggle fit, BTW). I know Steve's doing the whole "I'm-Not-Captain-America-Right-Now" thing, but there's just something about Steve in the blue top with the star and the white fabric change that screams "Look at my abs!" that I miss.

Let's just face it. Steve's hot.

[identity profile] ellyr-in-ink.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, actually. Really just a lot like Ult!Steve.

I think it'd look better if they had the wings. His head does look kind of bald. But other than that, I don't mind the modern look. Although when going to movies, I've learned to ignore the comics/books when watching. So that helps a lot.

[identity profile] melisus.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's just concept art, not the final design. I think they've done some interesting things as a starting point, for example the use of red support straps to simulate the red and white stripes traditional to the costume's midsection.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
The shield makes me think this is a modern-day Cap. In 1610, he didn't get the round shield until he was defrosted, and certain things I will not name for the sake of spoilers makes me think they're following that line. Plus everyone else is right. It looks too modern. :\ Plus, I heard something about a helmet..? So! We'll see.

[identity profile] melisus.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the only thing is, the certain artifact in said movie you're referring to is supposed to be a prototype designed by Tony's father (there was a tie-in comic about the Adventures of Agent Coulson put out a couple summers ago), so the shield in the movie-verse could very well end up being round...

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
It could, but I have a hard time seeing anyone pass up the chance to have Tony perfect the Iconic Artifact Of Subtle Reference. (Watch, I have now doomed it.) I think Howard was working on it, but it was clearly only half finished. Maybe Steve "died" before it was done, and so Howard put it away.

[identity profile] strzyga.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
well there was that scene in iron man 2 with cap's shield, so i'm getting the feeling it's something howard was working on and tony's going to perfect. i'm a little curious though as to whether steve's gonna have the shield in WWII -- maybe a prototype?

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping they'll go with the standard edged shield from early Cap. 616 and 1610 both started out with that one, so it would be a nice snug fit. He can use it while Howard is working on the round shield.

Why do I have a feeling I'm going to walk out of there shipping Steve/Tony's Dad? D:

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
It woooould. FML. D: Hopefully, Howard will be eminently UnSlashable. I do not want Skeeve in my Steve/Tony!

Or perhaps there will be Maria? Though I think she would be too young in WWII for Tony to have been born when he was, unless Tony was a Late Comer.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Considering IM2, Tony finding out that Steve knew Howard is going to be interesting. :D

I hope that they have a Maria. She doesn't get nearly enough attention, and anyone who managed to survive raising Tony for the most part must have been pretty awesome. (1610 Maria was just hands-down badass, but I do not want her story, due to DEATH.)

[identity profile] girlnotorious.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense. For some reason cannon flew out the window for me when I was watching IM 2, and the only thing running thrugh my head during that scene was: 'Tony scrapped Steve's sheild?! Cap'll be PISSED if he doesn't put it back together before he gets thawed!'

And ensuing mental images of Steve pouting and being mildly angry but understanding, and Tony freaking out thinking he blew his first impression.

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
XD I am pretty sure it was meant to be one of Howard's unfinished projects, since it came out of a box of his other WWII-era projects and wasn't completely put together yet.

Plus, Tony just (spoiler - highlight) created Vibranium, which has some fun implications for the future of the shield.

[identity profile] girlnotorious.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! I was having happy spazzes about that. The instant the words 'new element' were spoken I was gripping by best friend's arm and spouting comic history at her (she's an exeptionally good person, putting up with me.)

[identity profile] silver-autumn.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
It does seem very modern.

I like it.

The helmet/cowl like thing though...it looks strange.

[identity profile] gogglehead84.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I like it, but even though everyone says they hate the wings.... I miss them. :(

[identity profile] dieewigenacht.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'll stand by what I say in another comm:

This turns me on, even if I still can't see Evans as Cap (I will, eventually, I just need to try)

[identity profile] strzyga.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
lmao this!

Captain America and a Banana Split?

[identity profile] ellyr-in-ink.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, right now when I think of Chris Evans (and god, I love him and Not Another Teen Movie)...

But all I think of is this....

Re: Captain America and a Banana Split?

[identity profile] dieewigenacht.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe, yeah.

But hey! Maybe he'll surprise us.

[identity profile] ellyr-in-ink.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I believe in him. He hits the gym and he'll be golden.

And would whipped cream really be a bad look for Steve? I don't think so. :D

Re: Captain America and a Banana Split?

[identity profile] ani-bester.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know that he even needs to be in a Gym that much, given dteve was big but like Average big in some comics.
Evans looks prett good in this clip IMHO.

[identity profile] ellyr-in-ink.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
No, but if he looks like the art up top....

:D

:D

:D

YAY!!!!
There needs to be fic with Steve in that get up.

Steve wakes up to find he's been "decorated" by Tony and Clint: Clint because he thought it would be funny to pick on Steve "Banana-Stick-Up-His-Butt" Rogers, and Tony because he was really planning to discuss the issue in-depth with Steve in a private room after Steve woke up.

I really like this.

[identity profile] lisiche.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I hope they at least STENCIL wings on... it's not Cap without wings. I can't wrap my mind around the concept.

[identity profile] strzyga.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
you're right, it is pretty modern, but overall i think it's a pretty sick design. i think it'll prbly get a little more, ah, accurate to the time as they develop the concept designs. lmao i have to wonder, though, how much they're gonna make chris evans buff himself up.

[identity profile] rizyu.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with Lisiche. They need to put the wings on there somehow... he just looks so bald with out them. Over all I like the design. Even if this is say the Avengers design and they would go back and make it look more WWII era later on. They got a nice start to it. More sleek design thats for sure =3

[identity profile] girlnotorious.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
The geometric pants are throwing me off a bit, and I miss the red boots (that I want wings kind of goes without saying.)

Overall, though? Not too bad. I think they're trying to make him look... less absurd, for those who aren't fans and therefore don't appreciate his colorful hero wardrobe.

[identity profile] illuminatius.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
OH HAI ULTIMATE CAP.

This is pretty good actually. I like the white/blue, even though it lacks the red boots to complete the color sceme.

Also, wings. I don't care how they do it, but his cowl needs wings.

I can't get over how reflective the shield looks. @_@

[identity profile] vejiicakes.livejournal.com 2010-06-03 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
Not yet sure how to feel about the harness!shoulders and how busy all that texture makes the design, though having the red straps in place of the stripes at his midsection is pretty clever.

I do, as most everyone else has mentioned, miss the wings too. Maybe even just a splash of white paint at the temples on his helmet/cowl would help with the "baldness" though I'm.. not sure the designers of his uniform in the movie could justify painting little swirly wings on his helmet... (And I don't know why, but that brown with that red is very off-putting to me. /grousegrousegrouse)

It's like the Ultimates suit cranked up to eleven.

I like some details, but it will look so out of place if he's wearing it during WWII o____o

Clean-lined, almost modular construction?
C-130-jump-seat-red equipment harness straps?
Subtle, up-pointing chest-chevron of white on white, almost like the wings of an airplane, serving no structural purpose?
Bright colors instead of muted?
Perfectly machined high-tech-looking metal buckles EVERYWHERE?
Please.
It's modern because it's Starktech.
Look at the material used to make the shoulder-armor, and then compare it to Tony's flak vest in the scene right the humvee attack.
It's the same stuff.
